After Ducsu, Another Couple Wins in Jaksu Election
Following the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) polls, yet another couple has emerged victorious—this time in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jaksu) election. Both contested from the Islami Chhatra Shibir–backed panel ‘Combined Student Alliance’ and secured their wins.
The couple is Tariqul Islam, a student of the Department of Mathematics, and Nigar Sultana, a student of the Department of Pharmacy at Jahangirnagar University. Tariqul was elected as an Executive Member (Male) with 1,746 votes, while Nigar Sultana won the post of Joint Social Welfare and Human Services Development Secretary (Female) with 2,966 votes.
The Jaksu election was held on 11 September after a long gap of 33 years, and results were declared about 44 hours later. Tariqul Islam is currently serving as the Social Welfare Secretary of the university unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, while Nigar Sultana serves as Co-Head (Female Section) of the university’s Qur’an and Cultural Study Club.
Earlier, on 9 September, a similar case was seen in the Ducsu polls where another couple won. They were Raihan Uddin, a student of the Department of English, and his wife Umme Salma. Raihan was elected as an Executive Member, and Salma secured the post of Common Room, Reading Room, and Cafeteria Secretary. Both had contested from the Islami Chhatra Shibir–backed ‘United Student Alliance’ panel.
This rare back-to-back success of student couples has now become a much-discussed phenomenon in campus politics.
