Sylhet Triple Murder: Suspect Babul Mia Arrested

Sylhet Correspondent: Police have arrested a man named Babul Mia, 40, in connection with the triple murder in the Raynagar area of Sylhet city.

Babul Mia was arrested at around 5:00pm on Wednesday from Akhtar Mia’s colony in the Rajbari area of Raynagar. A team of police led by SI Shiplu Chowdhury, in-charge of the Sobhanighat Police Outpost, conducted the operation and arrested him.

Police said Babul Mia provided information about the killings during preliminary interrogation. Based on the information obtained from him, police launched a search operation to recover the knife allegedly used in the murders. According to police, the suspect told investigators that the knife had been thrown into nearby bushes after the incident.

At a briefing held in front of the victims’ residence on Wednesday evening, Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim told journalists that Babul Mia had been in a romantic relationship with Tahmina, a domestic worker at the house, for several days.

According to the police commissioner, the relationship had developed into a dispute over an alleged intention to have a physical relationship. Babul Mia reportedly went to the house at around 9:30am on Wednesday, and Tahmina opened the door for him.

Police said that during a conversation about the alleged physical relationship, an argument broke out between Babul Mia and Tahmina. At one point, Babul allegedly stabbed Tahmina with a knife.

Hearing Tahmina’s screams, the female homeowner, identified as Suraiya Begum, came forward. She was also allegedly stabbed. Later, the male homeowner, Abdus Sattar, came to the scene after hearing the screams and was also stabbed.

Police said all three victims died in the incident.

However, questions have been raised locally about the motive behind the killings. Some local residents have questioned why Babul Mia would have carried a knife if his sole intention was to meet his alleged romantic partner and have a physical relationship.

Some locals have also speculated that the murders could be linked to a property-related dispute involving the deceased couple. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence to substantiate this claim, and police have not ruled out any possible motive.

Police said they are investigating the actual motive behind the killings, whether the incident was pre-planned and whether anyone else was involved. The search for the knife allegedly used in the murders is also continuing.

Meanwhile, Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khan Mohammad Mainul Zakir said that preparations were underway to file a case on behalf of the victims.

Police said the exact circumstances and motive behind the triple murder would become clearer as the investigation progresses.
