Shibir-backed Panel Sweeps Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union Elections

Savar, September 12: The long-anticipated Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) and hall union election results were officially declared on Saturday afternoon (September 12), with the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed alliance securing a landslide victory.

In a major development, independent candidate Abdur Rashid Jitu won the prestigious Vice President (VP) post, while the Shibir-backed panel clinched three of the top four positions. Mazharul Islam was elected General Secretary (GS), while Ferdous Al Hasan and Ayesha Siddika Meghla from the same panel won the positions of Assistant General Secretary (Male) and Assistant General Secretary (Female) respectively.

According to the Election Commission’s announcement, the Shibir-backed Integrated Students’ Alliance claimed 21 out of 25 posts, marking an overwhelming dominance in this year’s election.

For the Executive Member posts, Nabila Binte Harun, Fabliha Jahan, and Nusrat Jahan Ema (female) as well as Md. Tarikul Islam, Abu Talha, and Md. Ali Chishti (male) won — all from the Shibir-backed alliance.

Voter Turnout

Voting was held in 21 residential halls from Thursday morning (9 a.m.) to evening (5 p.m.) in a festive atmosphere. Ballot boxes were then brought to the Senate Building, and counting continued until Friday evening. After two suspensions, the Election Commission resumed the process and announced results on Saturday evening.

Out of 11,743 registered voters, 6,015 were male students and 5,728 were female students. A total of 8,003 ballots were cast, amounting to a 68% turnout.

Participation & Panels

This year, 177 candidates contested 25 positions, including 9 for VP, 8 for GS, 6 for AGS (female), and 10 for AGS (male). Eight panels took part, including left-wing groups, Shibir, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and independents.

Student Reactions

The results sparked widespread celebration across campus. Victorious candidates pledged to uphold democracy, safeguard student rights, and ensure a peaceful academic environment at Jahangirnagar University.
