The Pakistan Muslim Centre in Sheffield hosted a vibrant and memorable celebration on the occasion of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Anniversary, drawing large participation from the British-Pakistani community, local dignitaries, and families. The annual event showcased unity, cultural diversity, and the spirit of togetherness within the city.
The day’s programme featured a dual flag-raising ceremony, the national anthem of Pakistan, and a rich display of cultural heritage. Organised in collaboration with South Asian Heritage Month, the event attracted scores of community members, especially young children who delighted audiences with enthusiastic performances including singing, poetry recitations, drama, and role plays. The children’s segment was coordinated and coached by Sister Imrana Haq and members of the Pakistan Muslim Centre’s organising team.
Several high-profile dignitaries graced the occasion, including councillors of Sheffield City Council, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the Leader of the Council, the Master Cutler, a newly appointed member of the House of Lords, representatives from Buckingham Palace, political representatives from Azad Kashmir, and the Mayor of Rotherham.
Community stalls, literature corners, and information booths were set up, offering visitors valuable resources and opportunities for engagement. Traditional entertainment, including folk music and the iconic dhol, added colour to the celebrations.
Organisers emphasised that the event not only honoured Pakistan’s independence but also reinforced Sheffield’s reputation as a City of Sanctuary by strengthening community unity, multicultural ties, and intergenerational engagement.
The celebration was made possible through the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the Pakistan Muslim Centre, and community radio station Link FM 96.7. Organisers extended special thanks to Councillor Nighat Bashrat, Tariq Hussain, Ishfaq Kiyani, Sister Imrana Haq Ali, Ash Hussain Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Families Relief charity, MP Abtisam Mohammed, and many other supporters, sponsors, and donors, including those who contributed raffle draw prizes.
The Pakistan Muslim Centre has set a strong annual tradition of bringing the community together to commemorate Pakistan’s Independence Day. Organisers vowed to continue this effort in the years ahead, fostering unity, cultural pride, and shared heritage among Sheffield’s diverse communities.
