Struggling to Breathe Through Your Nose? Septoplasty Could Be the Solution

STV Global24 | Health Desk

If you’re constantly dealing with nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, frequent sinus infections, or sleep disturbances, a deviated nasal septum or enlarged turbinate might be the culprit. The modern and effective solution to these issues is Septoplasty — a surgical procedure that straightens the nasal septum and clears the nasal airway.

Dr. Md. Abdul Hafiz Shafi, ENT Specialist and Resident Surgeon at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, explains,

“A deviated septum or enlarged turbinate can significantly restrict nasal airflow. Many patients rely on sprays or medications for years without long-term relief. Septoplasty offers a permanent solution in most cases.”

🔍 What Causes the Problem?

The nasal septum—the cartilage and bone dividing the nasal cavity—may become deviated due to congenital reasons or injury. Enlarged turbinates further narrow the airway, making breathing difficult and increasing the risk of infections and snoring.

⚙️ What Happens During the Surgery?

Septoplasty involves correcting the deviation of the septum and, if necessary, reducing the size of the turbinate. This opens the nasal passage and improves airflow.
✅ The surgery is performed entirely through the inside of the nose, so no visible external cuts or scars are left behind.

⏱️ Surgery Duration and Recovery

  • The procedure typically takes 40 to 60 minutes
  • Patients usually stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days
  • Nasal packing is placed for the first 24 hours, during which mouth breathing is required
  • Light bleeding after pack removal is normal
  • Internal plastic splints may be used and are usually removed after 7 days
  • Most patients can return to normal activities within 7 to 14 days

⚠️ Are There Any Risks?

Like any surgery, Septoplasty carries minor risks such as temporary bleeding, pain, or reduced sense of smell. However, with the use of modern technology and experienced surgical teams, the risk is minimal.

👨‍⚕️ Who Should Consider Septoplasty?

Patients suffering from chronic nasal obstruction, deviated septum, or enlarged turbinates that affect their daily life should consult with an ENT specialist. An evaluation is necessary to determine if the procedure is appropriate.
